SEATTLE, Jan. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – Boeing (NYSE: BA) booked 1,203 net commercial airplane orders in 2012, the second-largest number in company history. The company also delivered 601 airplanes, the most since 1999. Boeing’s unfilled commercial airplane orders at the end of the year stood at 4,373, the most in company history.

“Our employees rose to the challenge of executing several production rate increases in 2012—a truly remarkable performance,” said Ray Conner, president and CEO, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Increasing our deliveries by 26 percent allowed us to put more airplanes into the hands of our customers and grow our customer base by offering the best products and services.”

The 737 program broke the record for orders for any Boeing model in a single year, accumulating 1,124 net orders. The 737 MAX – the new engine variant of the best-selling 737 – recorded 914 of those orders, bringing total orders to date to 1,064. In addition, the Next-Generation 737 set a new single-year record with 415 deliveries to customers worldwide. The 737 program also celebrated its 10,000th order in 2012.

Boeing’s leadership in the widebody market continued in 2012. The year began with the five-continent 787 Dream Tour and ended with 11 787 deliveries in December to seven customers. To date, 49 787s have been delivered to eight customers.

The 777, which totaled 83 deliveries in 2012 and surpassed 1,000 since launch, won 68 net orders. The airplane continues to win accolades from passengers, earning three prestigious awards voted on by business travelers. With 31 deliveries in 2012, the 747-8 Intercontinental and Freighter have received positive reviews from customers and are performing as expected in service.

“As we look ahead to 2013, we’re focused on meeting our customer commitments by increasing production rates and delivering high-quality, reliable products and services,” said Conner. “We will also transition the 787-9 into production and flight test and work closely with customers, who contribute so much to our success, to continue defining the 787-10X and 777X.”

The total order backlog for the advanced military-transport Il-76MD-90A (Il-476) aircraft is assessed at 1 trillion rubles, CEO of Ilyushin Company, Viktor Livanov, said. AEX.ru

“Taking into account the development of the whole aircraft family on the basis of Il-76MD-90A (including advanced tanker aircraft), we believe that the order backlog for these jets will reach 1 trillion rubles soon”, – Viktor Livanov said.

He also noted that the aircraft has a great export potential and it will be offered to the current operators of Il-76 and other Russian-made aircraft. According to Livanov, the serial production of this jet will be carried out in Russia using the advanced technology of 3D digital design.

Viktor Livanov also said that the flight testing of Il-76MD-90A should be completed in the third quarter of 2014, while the first stage of the testing will be completed in the third quarter of 2013. At present the jet resides at Ulyanovsk-based Aviastar-SP. The aircraft has already performed several flights. It is being prepared for flight to Zhukovsky (Moscow Region), where the first stage of the flight testing will be started.

We remind you that Russian Ministry of Defense and United Aircraft Corporation signed a contract in October 2012 on delivery of 39 military-transport Il-76MD-90A aircraft manufactured by Aviastar-SP. The value of this contract is about 140 billion rubles.

SEATTLE, Jan. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced today an order by Aviation Capital Group (ACG) for 60 737 MAX airplanes. ACG’s order, consisting of 50 737 MAX 8s and 10 737 MAX 9s, was finalized in December 2012. The 737 MAX has now accumulated more than 1,000 orders to date.

“This order is a major step in building our broad portfolio of modern, fuel-efficient airplanes,” said Denis Kalscheur, chief executive officer of ACG. “The 737 MAX enables us to offer our customers airplanes that provide the fuel efficiency, reliability and passenger comforts needed to grow in tomorrow’s marketplace.”

The order, worth $6 billion at current list prices, further illustrates the strong demand for the 737 MAX in the airplane leasing industry.

“We are proud of the confidence that ACG has placed in the 737 MAX,” said John Wojick, senior vice president of Global Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 737 MAX will deliver to ACG’s customers unsurpassed efficiency in the single-aisle market as well as improved environmental performance.”

The Next-Generation 737 is the most fuel-efficient and reliable single-aisle airplane today with an 8 percent per-seat operating cost advantage over the nearest competitor. The 737 MAX builds on these strengths with advances in fuel-efficiency and environmental performance. Equipped with new LEAP-1B engines from CFM International and improvements such as the Advanced Technology Winglet, the MAX reduces fuel burn and CO2 emissions by 13 percent while maintaining the 8 percent operating cost advantage over future competition.

These efficiencies have powered the 737 MAX to the impressive order milestone. With ACG’s order, the 737 MAX has orders for 1,029 airplanes from airlines and leasing companies worldwide.

“Reaching 1,000 orders in just over a year’s time from our first order validates the exceptional value the 737 MAX offers our customers,” said Bob Feldmann, vice president and general manager, 737 MAX. “Customers are expressing confidence in our ability to deliver improved performance on schedule.”

Two entertainment industry executives announced plans to acquire two companies in a $430-million transaction aimed at capitalizing on the growing consumer demand for in-flight services.

Global Eagle Acquisitions said it has reached an agreement to buy privately held Row 44 Inc., a Westlake Village company that provides satellite broadband service for Southwest Airlines, the nation’s largest domestic carrier. It also agreed to acquire 86% of the outstanding shares of Advanced Inflight Alliance, a German company that supplies games, movies, general entertainment and applications to more than 130 airlines worldwide.
KUWAIT, Nov. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Kuwait airplane leasing company ALAFCO finalized an order for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8s valued at $2.0 billion at current list price. The order was first announced as a commitment at the Farnborough Airshow in July.

“This is the first order for the 737 MAX from the Middle East, which is one of the aviation industry’s highest growth regions,” said Ray Conner, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We are proud of the confidence that ALAFCO has placed in the 737 MAX, and hope to continue this partnership well into the future.”

The 737 MAX is the new-engine variant of the world’s best-selling airplane and builds on the strengths of today’s Next-Generation 737. The airplane will be powered by new CFM International LEAP-1B engines. Along with the engines, aerodynamic improvements to the tail and the new Advanced Technology winglet, the 737 MAX will reduce fuel burn and CO2 emissions by 13 percent over today’s most fuel-efficient single-aisle airplane, the Next-Generation 737. The 737 MAX will have the lowest operating costs in the single-aisle segment with an 8 percent advantage per seat over tomorrow’s competition.

“Today, with rising fuel costs, the 737 MAX will provide operational cost savings to airlines in addition to being more environmentally friendly due to its latest quiet engine technology,” stated ALAFCO’s chairman and CEO Ahmad Alzabin during the Farnborough Airshow. “These are the advantages that airlines are looking for in the current competitive and demanding environment.”

The order brings the total number of 737 MAX orders to date to 878.

(Reuters) – Airbus will be looking for a long-awaited new order for its A350-1000 mini-jumbo at this week’s Farnborough Airshow, with Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific tipped as most likely to end a three-year order drought, industry sources said.

Cathay Pacific has 36 of the A350-900 base model on order, and may add on further orders for the stretched A350-1000 or convert some of its existing orders, or both, the sources said.

Airbus (EAD.PA) and Cathay Pacific (0293.HK) declined to comment.

Airbus says the future 350-seat carbon-composite passenger jet will be much more efficient than Boeing‘s (BA.N) 777 but has so far been unable to make a significant dent in the 777′s hold on a lucrative corner of the jet market, just below 400 seats.

Due in service from 2014, the A350 is Airbus’s response to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the first in a new generation of lightweight carbon-composite jets designed to consume less fuel.

Spanning two categories, it also challenges the older 777 which leads the market for large-capacity long-range twinjets.

Airbus has started building the first A350-900 test aircraft and has a total of 548 of the A350 family aircraft on order.

Sales of the A350-1000 mini-jumbo are disappointing, however, accounting for 62 of the 548.

Some Middle East airlines have complained about its range and payload capacity, prompting Airbus and engine maker Rolls-Royce (RR.L) to bolster the engine design and relaunch the aircraft at the Paris Air Show last year.

Airbus attributes slow sales of the A350-1000 to the lack of availability before late in this decade, but Boeing continues to post strong sales of the 777 which had a record year in 2011.

Boeing is touting a more efficient 407-seat version of its most profitable jet with new engines to try to stay ahead of the A350-1000 which is based on a lighter fuselage.

COUNTING ORDERS

Airbus sales chief John Leahy said last month the planemaker could announce an A350-1000 order at the July 9-15 show.

That adds to what some air show delegates say could be a busier-than-expected event for Airbus, which tends to spring air show surprises, while Boeing is ratcheting down expectations by insisting it builds up its portfolio over the whole year.

As the order guessing game built up on the eve of what promises to be rain-sodden air show, business expected at Farnborough included purchases of the Boeing 737 MAX by lessors Air Lease and Alafco and a possible scalp for Airbus with an order from Russian airline UT Air.

Arkia Israel Airlines was also expected to order aircraft.

Both manufacturers have left scope for surprises. Boeing’s new commercial aircraft division chief executive Ray Conner told reporters he expected a “decent” air show – a slightly more downbeat forecast than one from his predecessor Jim Albaugh, who said in Beijing last month he expected a “very good” event.

Airbus’ Leahy said in an interview last week he did not expect to sell as many aircraft as Boeing at Farnborough. Industry sources expect Airbus to log sales or commitments of about a quarter of the 1,000 it took last year, when it created a frenzy of demand with a revamped A320.

Boeing is expected to bounce back this year with a competing model and may overtake its rival for the first since 2006.

Boeing Chief Executive James McNerney told European newspapers on Sunday that having done so it could outsell Airbus for “a number of years”.

The two planemakers have most of the market for narrowbody short-haul planes and control all the market for wide-bodies.

Including smaller competitors, global jet sales are estimated at approximately $100 billion a year.

Airbus and Boeing go into the show engaged in a bitter contest for market share after the switch to more fuel-efficient short-haul models, the industry’s bread and butter, shook up a market estimated at $2 trillion over 20 years.

The firefight has included a back-and-forth battle for 40-50 jets worth $4-5 billion sought by Istanbul-based budget carrier Pegasus Airlines, with Boeing trying to prevent the 737 operator defecting to Airbus, industry sources said.

Boeing has accused Airbus of aggressive pricing and vowed recently to defend its share of the market, but Leahy said it was the “height of arrogance” to suggest airlines could not switch from one planemaker to the other.

Airbus faced a surprise challenge from a different quarter on the eve of the show, however, as Reuters reported Canada’s Bombardier (BBDb.TO) was in talks with AirAsia (AIRA.KL) over a 160-seat CSeries.

Chief executives of the two companies met at the Silverstone

British Grand Prix race track at the weekend. AirAsia is a flagship Airbus customer and is in talks to buy another 50 A320s on top of a record 200-jet order last year.

Boeing is set to hit back in its orders battle with rival Airbus at the upcoming Farnborough airshow, looking to take the lead in the key short-haul plane market despite a weak global economic outlook.

“The wide consensus is that this will be a Boeing show,” said Christophe Menard, an analyst at financial group Kepler Capital Markets.

US giant Boeing is looking to steal a march against European rival Airbus in the market for single-aisle, fuel-efficient commercial planes, touting its upgraded 737 MAX workhorse against the new, more fuel-efficient A320neo series.

“Boeing will definitely announce more aircraft than we do at Farnborough but I would only ask everybody … not to just look at this year’s orders,” Airbus chief commercial officer John Leahy said last week as the group unveiled plans to build its first ever US assembly plant in a bid to keep up the pressure on Boeing.

“Look at the two years 2011 and 2012. We’ll out-sell Boeing in total in those two years. We’ll out-sell Boeing in the neo versus the Max in those two years in which both have been offered to sell — and that will keep us in a very good position,” Leahy said.

Boeing’s 737 MAX is an upgraded and more fuel efficient version of the 737, the world’s best-selling commercial airplane. The first 737 MAX is scheduled to be delivered in 2017 and is a response to the Airbus A320neo.

Airbus says the A320neo, due to enter service in late 2015, will use 15 percent less fuel than its current best-performing A320 model.

“The short-haul arena will be very interesting … because Boeing is going to reveal more information about their plans for the 737 MAX family,” independent commercial aviation expert John Strickland said.

“In some ways, they were put on the back foot because Airbus announced the neo, which went for stunning orders at the Paris airshow last year,” Strickland said.

“Whether it’s long-haul or short-haul, in a climate of weak economic demand, especially led by Europe, and with fuel prices remaining stubbornly high, airlines are always looking at ways to improve fuel efficiency. So aircraft that deliver that are going to be really, really key,” he added.

Ahead of the UK’s biennial Farnborough show, Australian budget carrier Virgin ordered 23 of Boeing’s 737 MAX8 jets to replace the aging 737-700 portion of its fleet.

Airbus also had some good news of its own ahead of the show with its plans to open a factory on Boeing’s home turf, a gambit that would see the firm roll out its first US-built plane by 2016.

The new US$600 million assembly plant, to be built in the southern port city of Mobile, Alabama, on the Gulf of Mexico, will produce the mainstay A320 family of passenger planes.

Airbus estimates 4,600 new single-aisle aircraft will be needed in the US over the next 20 years.

Boeing has raised its 20-year forecast for global demand for airliners by US$500 billion, with the market doubling to 34,000 aircraft worth US$4.5 billion.

At Farnborough, the long-haul commercial sector will also be in focus, as Boeing seeks to counter Airbus’ A380 superjumbo offer with its 747-8, an extended version of the successful 747.

Airbus will also be looking to seal more orders for its A350, its response to the 787 Dreamliner, which is now flying after long technical delays.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A big air show is all about bragging rights. It’s where airplane makers announce large jet orders, dazzle customers with aerial displays and show off their latest technology.

But a debt crisis in Europe could make the industry more subdued when it gathers at the Farnborough International Airshow near London this week. It’s a huge event in the aerospace world, attracting 1,400 exhibitors and aerospace heavyweights such as Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, Bombardier and ATR.

Air travel tracks economic growth, and there isn’t much of that right now in Europe, one of the world’s largest aircraft markets. Europe’s crisis could crimp aircraft sales for Airbus and Boeing, the world’s two largest airplane manufacturers. Longer term, there is still plenty of demand from growing airlines in China, India and the rest of the developing world.

Barclays analyst Joseph Campbell expects total orders to fall this year, but not because of the economy. He thinks they’ll fall because Boeing and Airbus have a combined backlog of 8,312 planes, and they make roughly 1,000 a year.

Their backlogs are so big, ‘‘and the first available slots so far away, that there’s not much left to sell’’ other than Boeing’s 737 Max, he says.

For Chicago-based Boeing, this year’s show offers a chance for its revamped 737, called the 737 Max, to close a gap with a rival jet. The Max has a more fuel-efficient engine than its predecessor and will compete with Airbus’ A320neo, another top-selling plane in the same size range that is getting a new engine. Higher fuel prices mean airlines are willing to pay for more fuel efficiency.

Airbus got a jump on Boeing, offering the neo much earlier. It’s already got 1,325 orders from 25 customers. Boeing has orders for 451 Maxes and commitments for more of the planes, which have a list price between $78 million and $102 million.

‘‘This is a year that they need to play catch-up,’’ says Richard Aboulafia, an aerospace analyst for the Teal Group.

Airbus aims to begin delivering the A320neo in 2015. Boeing’s 737 MAX will go into production in 2015 and start hauling passengers in in 2017.

Boeing heads to the event with a new chief of commercial aircraft, Ray Conner. Until late June, Conner ran Boeing’s sales efforts, so he’ll be right at home in Farnborough pitching the Max to potential customers.

Toulouse, France-based Airbus, meanwhile, announced last week that it would build its first airplane factory in the United States. The plant will produce the A320 in Mobile, Ala., starting in 2015, aiming to better compete against Boeing.

- Reconfirmation rights for 25 more 737 MAX airplanes

FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom, July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Air Lease Corporation (NYSE: AL) announced today a firm order for 60 737 MAX 8 and 15 737 MAX 9 airplanes, with reconfirmation rights for 25 additional 737 MAXs. The order, with a list-price value of $7.2 billion, represents the first 737 MAX order by a leasing company.

“The 737 MAX is an excellent addition to our portfolio and the ideal complement to our growing fleet of Next-Generation 737-800s,” said Steven Udvar-Hazy, chairman and CEO of Air Lease Corporation. “The 737 MAX represents a step-change improvement that our airline clients need to compete in the future.”

The 737 MAX is a new-engine variant of the world’s best selling airplane and builds on the strengths of today’s Next-Generation 737. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest-technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market.

Airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 13 percent fuel burn improvement over today’s most fuel efficient single-aisle airplanes and an eight percent operating cost per seat advantage over tomorrow’s competition.

“This 737 MAX order continues ALC‘s disciplined approach to building its young, fuel-efficient fleet,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. “The ALC leadership team has an excellent record of placing Boeing airplanes with airlines worldwide. They are an ideal partner to help establish the 737 MAX in the leasing market.”

The ALC order builds on the continued market success of the 737 MAX. To date, the 737 MAX has orders and commitments for more than 1,000 airplanes.

ALC has ordered a total of 170 airplanes from Boeing including 75 737 MAX, 78 Next-Generation 737-800s, five 777-300ERs (Extended Range) and 12 787-9 Dreamliners.
